There is nothing wrong with all kinds of religion or cults, for as long as tolerance and respect among the faithful are observed. If there is no violent or aggressive attempt of conversion, I do not think that animosity shall be developed among the parties concerned. Conversion should be done “indirectly” – through convincing actions by the advocates, to show others that indeed, their religion is worth embracing. People should be given a liberal option as to what faith they should follow. They should not be intimidated by force, or threatened with the nozzle of a gun.

Special reference is being made to the religious polarization of the world between Christian and Islamic faiths. Tension between the two has slackened after the Crusade era. But, it seems that even religion is following a cycle or giving truth to the adage that history repeats itself, as lately, an aggressive Islamic expansionism is on the rise, spearheaded by its extremist advocates. There is a global attempt today for the “restoration” of Islam as supposedly the world religion, and even an aggressive “expansion”, which to the layman could mean “mass conversion”.

Hugging cyber news pages are European countries that are under the pressure exerted by the influx of Muslim immigrants, purportedly victims of persecution in their countries of origin, particularly, Syria. And, there is even an appeal by the United Nations to the far-off Asian countries to “adopt” some of them. Some European countries, being nearest to the origin of these evacuees were the first to offer succor and accommodated the refugees. Unfortunately, these generous countries are now being rocked with unrest by the same beneficiary of sympathy, in the name of the latter’s Islamic faith. There is even a bold threat by a group of Muslims in Denmark that their host shall become the “first Muslim country in Europe”.

The extremist ISIS group has done more than enough destruction to the historic and Biblical countries that they occupied and fear to the rest that they plan to overrun. Will Europe suffer the same fate, as there could be Islamic terrorists who may have successfully melded with the so-called “refugees” who have been accommodated by sympathetic European countries? From Europe, will masquerading terrorists who may have successfully blended with authentic refugees creep their way towards Southeast Asia to muddle the harmonious and peaceful co-existence of Christians and Muslims?

While the Muslims are aggressive in their attempt to convert others, none of such drive can be observed among the Christians, especially, the Roman Catholics. The publicities being enjoyed by the Vatican because of the controversial new pope, Francis, should not be taken as an attempt to convert. In fact, there is an ongoing cleansing within the Roman Catholic community, as shown by the purging of erring church leaders, as well as, vehement reminders of the pope for his flock to follow the “Christian way”. Nothing about converting Muslims, Protestants, etc. is being done in any way. On the other hand, if the effort of the new pope is viewed by skeptics as a convincing “Christian act” of a Roman Catholic, it is up to them to decide if they want to jump over the fence and join the flock of Jesus.

In the Philippines, particularly, Mindanao, the Muslims and Christians are enjoying a harmonious and peaceful co-existence. The call for autonomy which many Filipinos deemed long overdue is more political and not a matter of religion. In fact, it is expected that the same clamor for political autonomy shall be raised by the rest of the regions as the system has been proved to be effective in the Cordillera Region, although, deemed necessary in the first place, due to the archipelagic make up of the country.

The Philippines is a clear manifestation of harmony if tolerance and respect among people with diverse culture and faith, are observed. In view of the threat that is now rocking some European countries due to aggressive religious assertion by Islamic fundamentalists, Filipinos should be more vigilant and help each other in maintaining a steadfast resistance against any religiously-hooded incursion that could be tainted with evil intent. Filipinos have stood united on a foundation of strongly- welded brotherhood that not even the corrupted political system failed to shake. This fervent show of steadfast conviction should send a warning to the evil-minded around the world, that the Philippines is not a breeding ground for  unrest under the cloak of religion that the misguided extremists plan to foment…as such attempt shall never and ever be tolerated!

Nothing on earth is perfect. That is the reason why nobody has the right to say that his or her religion or family or child, decision, etc. is perfect. Not even identical twins are perfectly identical. Religion which is invented by man is not perfect or rather, the perfect way towards eternal Bliss. Religions do not teach perfect philosophies or way of life. Some people behind religions use fraudulent tactics in their conversion efforts. Some churches regardless of faith have been questioned since the early times on the issue of corruption. But this does not mean that religion is totally bad. Somehow, as it is supposed to teach virtues, there is still righteousness in it.

Since nobody and nothing else, for that matter, on earth is perfect, it is necessary that we should be tolerant to one another, especially, on the issue of faith. Let us avoid criticizing others, instead, we should manifest goodness in our action to the humanly best we can and hope that others will emulate us. If we fail to understand imperfection, as well as, practice tolerance of differences that prevail among us, there will never be peace, as each one will always try to prove that he is the best.

If communist countries will not tolerate the democratic system of their neighboring countries, expect clash of ideologies and eventually, war, which already happened in the past, and may erupt again soon. If Islamic advocates will not tolerate the evangelizing efforts of Christians who visit homes to share the Good News in a Muslim community, expect prosecutions that will result to hatred.

On the other hand, there is always the choice between good and better, and the final choice between better and best. But, it does not mean that what comes out as the best is already perfect. One who thinks this way, must be standing on the pedestal of pride!

Sino ba ang may gusto ng gulo? …ng giyera?…wala! Ang pinagyayabang ni Pnoy na Bangsmoro Basic Law (BBL) na siyang maglalatag ng self-governance ng isang rehiyon, ang Bangsamoro, sa Mindanao na sinasabing tinitirhan ng mga Moro, na hindi naman totoo dahil marami ring mga Kristiyano, ay maganda ang hangarin. Ang nakasira dito ay ang mga probisyon na one-sided na pinipilit palusutin ng mga taong nagsusulong sa mga ito, kaya naging kwestiyonable ang mga intensiyon – kung para ba sa nakararami o para lang sa iilan. Ang lalong nakasama, mismong mga representante ng gobyerno ay sangkot sa pagsulong ng mga nakakapanlinlang na layunin, na kung hindi dahil sa Mamasapano massacre ay hindi nabunyag.

Walang karapatang magyabang si Pnoy na para bang siya lang ang may gusto ng kapayapaan at ang mga tumutuligsa sa kanya at BBL ay gusto ng gulo. Hindi yata siya nakikinig sa mga isinisigaw na ng mga tao, na ang kailangan lang ay tanggalin ang mga probisyong hindi maganda ang layunin at palitan ang mga representante ng gobyerno sa peace panel, lalo na sina Deles at Ferrer. Kung pinipilit ni Pnoy na ayaw ng mga tao sa Mindanao ang BBL, talagang maling-mali siya. Sa uulitin, ang magandang layunin ng BBL ay sinira ni Pnoy dahil nagtalaga siya ng mga representante ng gobyerno na hindi gumawa ng nararapat at nagpipilit ng mga probisyong masama. At ngayon, tila desperado sa pagmamadaling maipasa ito habang nasa puwesto siya dahil ito na lang ang nakikita niyang mag-aangat sa kanya. Subalit nagkamali na naman siya ng pagtantiya dahil hindi na siya ganoon kapani-paniwala at mapagkakatiwalaang tao…sirang-sira na ang kanyang kredibilidad! Paano siyang maging credible kung ang simpleng anti-smoking na tinataguyod ng bansa ay hindi niya masunod dahil siya mismo ay chain smoker?

Ang BBL ay para ding Demokrasya na magandang-maganda ang porma at mga layunin dahil nagsusulong ng kalayaan ng mga taong nasa ilalim nito. Subalit tulad ng BBL na maganda ang layunin, ay nasira dahil sa pang-aabuso. Ang isang halimbawa ng pag-abuso sa demokrasya ay ang mahirap na bansang Pilipinas. Nakakalungkot na sa bansang ito ay talamak ang pag-abuso ng demokrasya sa mahabang panahon, ng mga taong matatalinong bar topnotcher, mga nagtapos sa mga unibersidad at may kursong hindi basta-basta, may angkan na nakatala sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas ang pangalan, at mga tanyag dahil artista, na ibinoto naman ng mga hangal na Pilipinong nagbenta ng kanilang kapangyarihan sa pagpili ng mga pinuno, kaya ngayon ay nakanganga at nagsisisi…pero huli na.

Ang mga inakalang matatalino at may malinis na hangaring mamuno ay mga sakim pala…mga gahaman sa perang hindi nila pinaghirapan! Sa mga kuwentong nabasa ko, ang mga taong nawalan na ng pag-asa at sobra na ang pagka-desperado ay nag-akalang pati kasinungaling sinasabi ay katotohanan!…at ang inakalang tinatawag na “diyos” ay demonyo na pala! Ibig sabihin, ang taong desperado ay nagiging bulag sa katotohanan! May isa ring medical finding na ang sobrang usok ng sigarilyo ay nakakasira ng mata at tenga…lalo na, ng utak…hindi lang ng baga, at nakaka-cancer pa.

Nilulusaw din daw ng usok ng sigarilyo ang “common sense” kaya madalas mawala sa sarili ang adik sa sigarilyo lalo na kung nakatutok ang isip sa computer games, at nagiging manhid pa sa damdamin ng kapwa dahil inaakala niyang siya lang ang may karapatan sa magandang buhay, pero lumalakas naman ang kanyang imagination dahil kung high na high na siya sa usok ay nag-iimagine nang siya by boyfriend ng seksing artista o model….

Dapat tumigil na si Obispo Tagle sa pakikisawsaw sa isyu ng Mamasapano. Bilang pinakamataas na opisyal ng simbahang Katoliko, dapat ay tumahimik na lang siya dahil inaasahan siyang nasa gitna. Hayaan na lamang niya ang iba pang mga taga-simbahang Katoliko na hindi naman pinaniniwalaan mula’t sapol.

Hindi pwedeng sabihin ng Obispo na dapat daw ay pagkatiwalaan ang MILF. Dapat maliwanagan ang Obispo na ang kinukwestyon ay ang mga taong namumuno sa MILF, hindi ang MILF bilang grupo. Kilala ba niya ng personal ang mga namumuno sa grupo kaya nagbitaw siya ng ganoong salita? Dahil sa kuwestiyonableng layunin ng mga namumuno, nalagay sa balag ng alanganin ang Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL). Marami silang inilagay na mga alituntunin na kuwestiyonable na hindi man lang nasita ng mga representante ng gobyerno na sina Deles at Ferrer – yon ang isyu.

Bakit walang taga-simbahan ng Katoliko sa “prayer meeting” sa Malakanyang noong March 9, 2015? Dapat ang Obispo ay nandoon upang nakapagtanong man lang siya sa ngalan ng kanyang mga “tupa” na galit sa presidente, at upang lalong “tumibay” ang pagkabilib niya sa pangulo na gustong paaprubahan ang BBL na walang babaguhin sa kabila ng nakakalinlang na mga probisyon, kaya labag sa Saligang Batas ng bansa. Nasaan ang Obispo noong March 9, 2015? Hindi ba siya imbitado, dahil wala nang bilib sa simbahang Katoliko ang presidente?

Mabuti pa ang lider ng Jesus is Lord Movement (JILM), na si Villanueva, na maliban sa pag-emcee ay nagbigay pa ng mungkahi na sana ang probisyon tungkol sa religious freedom ay mabigyan ng “ngipin” at “laman” o substance, upang lumabas na hindi lamang ito hanggang sa papel. Sa kasamaang palad, bilang sagot ay binasa lamang ng pangulo ang “preamble” ng BBL na wala namang laman. Kaya tulad ng dati, parang wala ring kinahinatnan ang mahalagang tanong. Ang gusto lang sanang mangyari ni Villanueva ay hindi ma-prosecute ang mga hindi Muslim sa isang region ng mga Moro, lalo na ang mga Kristiyanong misyonaryo at misyonarya. Sa ginawa ng presidente malinaw na hindi ito nagpakita ng pag-alala, na lalong nagpatibay sa paniniwala ng mga nakarinig sa sinabi niya, na talagang wala siyang pakialam kung ano man ang kahihinatnan ng mga gusto niyang mangyari tulad ng pagpapatupad ng BBL.

Paalala lang… isa sa dahilan kung bakit kailangang ma-define na mabuti ang Islamic Region kaya ang pangalan ay “Bangsamoro” ay upang mapaigting pa ang kampanya na “balik-Islam”, isang world-wide movement. Sana ay hindi magkaroon ng negative “religious competition” between Christians and Muslims sa magiging region na Bangsamoro. Ito sa palagay ko ang dahilan kung bakit nagmungkahi si Villanueva ng JILM na dapat specific ang mga provision sa BBL tungkol sa “religious freedom”. At, ito ang hindi naiintindihan ng presidente, ni Ferrer at Deles.

Kung nasa “prayer meeting” si Obispo Tagle, sana ay harap-harapan niyang narinig ang pag-alipusta ng presidente kay Napena nang mistulang duruin niya ito sa pamamagitan ng mga bintang dahil ito raw ang talagang dapat sisihin sa Mamasapano massacre, samantalang ni hindi man lang nabanggit ang best friend nito na si Purisima na nakialam kahit suspendido.

Kung gusto ng Obispo na hindi siya maipit sa palitan ng mga masasakit na pananaw tungkol sa Mamasapano massacre, lalo pa at wala naman siyang masabing malinaw, dapat ay tumahimik na lang siya. Iba ang ginagawa ng Santo Papa na gusto yatang gayahin ng Obispo. Ang Santo Papa ay nagbabahagi ng mga makatotohanang pananaw dahil batay ang mga ito sa mga talagang nadanasan niya. Meron ba siyang mga karanasang tulad ng sa Santo Papa? Kung wala, tumahimik na lang siya, at atupagin ang pagbabago sa simbahang Katoliko upang mabawasan ang mga lumilipat sa mga bagong sektang Kristiyano, lalo na sa Islam, dahil sa panawagang “balik-Islam”.

Dahil sa tindi ng mga kaguluhan at kalituhang nagresulta sa sunud-sunod na bulilyaso ng administrasyon ni Pnoy Aquino, hindi maiwasang maglaro ang imahinasyon ng mga Pilipino, at lalong hindi sila masisisi dahil ang mga nangyayari ay halos nakatuon sa mga maaaring mangyari, tulad ng mga sumusunod:

1. Kung magre-resign o ma-impeach si Pnoy bago sumapit ang pagtatapos ng kanyang termino, mapapasama sa kanyang pagbaba ang mga sinasabing kakutsaba niya na sina, Abad, Purisima, Alcantara, at Soliman. Kakaharapin nila ang malalaking kaso na ihahain ng iba’t ibang grupo. Maiiwan si Laila de Lima na tingin ng iba ay manipis lang ang mantsa ng katiwalian sa pagkatao nito, pero, dahil sa delikadesa ay maaaring mag-resign din. Ang makikinabang sa ganitong senaryo ay si Binay dahil bilang Bise-Presidente, siya ang papalit kay Pnoy….lalong dusa ang madadanasan ng mga Pilipino. Pagkakataon nan i Binay na magpakitang gilas sa taong bayan, na kailangan niya dahil sa may pagkadesperado niyang kagustuhang tumakbo bilang presidente.

2. Kung magtutuloy-tuloy ang mga protesta sa kalye ng Maynila at iba pang malalaking lunsod laban sa pamahalaan, subalit hindi pa rin magre-resign si Pnoy, mawawalan ng saysay ang kanyang basbas sa 2016 eleksiyon na hinihintay ni Roxas. Aalukin ni Binay si Roxas ng puwesto sa line-up niya sa 2016 bilang Bise-Presidente at kakagatin naman ni Roxas dahil desperado siyang maupo maski Bise-Presidente man lang.

3. Kung hindi na talaga mapigilan ang mga pagprotesta ng mga Pilipino na ang mga dahilan ay katiwalian sa pamahalaan ni Pnoy Aquino at kahinaan nito sa pagpapatakbo ng gobyerno, gagamitin itong dahilan ni Estrada na tumakbo bilang Presidente at makakalaban niya si Binay. Ang mangyayari ay pagpili ng mga Pilipino sa wikang Ingles na: choice between the devil and the deep black sea…oopps!, deep blue sea pala. Magpi-feeling savior si Erap na magsasabing tatapusin na niya ang problema sa Mindanao tulad ng pagkubkob sa Camp Abu Bakar, noong panahon niya.

4. Kung hindi matutuloy ang inaasam na pagpasa ng Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) bago bumaba si Pnoy dahil dumadami ang kumakalas na mga kongresista sa pagsuporta dito, magkakaroon ng ugnayan ang MILF, BIFF, at MNLF. Gagawa sila ng compromise agreement at idadahilan na lang ang magkapareho nilang Islamic cause, kaya balik sila sa original na adhikain na pagtiwalag sa Pilipinas upang magkaroon ng sariling bansa ang mga Muslim. Lalawak ang gusto nilang masakop na hindi saklaw sa mga pinag-usapan sa BBL. Napatunayan kasi na mahina ang leadership ng MILF,at iiral ang kagustuhan ng BIFF at MNLF, at nahalata rin ng tatlong grupo na animo ay takot ang pamahalaan sa pakikidigmang harap-harapan.

5. Kung magsanib-puwersa ang MILF, BIFF at MNLF, maaaring humingi ang mga ito ng tulong sa Malaysia na may katuwaang papasok sa eksena dahil magkakaroon na ito ng pagkakataong tanggalin nang tuluyan ang pagbawi ng Pilipinas sa Sabah. Malinaw na ito pa rin ang hangad ng Malaysia kahit pa sabihing mediator ito sa usaping pangkapayapaan sa Mindanao kaya hindi isinama dito ang claim ng Pilipinas sa Sabah. At maaari pa ring isali ang Bangsamoro sa federal government ng Malaysia. Dahil ayaw mapahiya ng liderato ng MILF, lahat ay gagawin nila para lang masabing nagtagumpay sila sa ngalan ng kapayapaan.

6. Kung magkakaroon ng cover-up sa gagawing imbestigasyon ng maraming grupo sa Mamasapano Massacre na magiging dahilan ng iba’t ibang resulta, lalabo ang pagkakaroon ng hustisya para sa mga namatay at nasugatan. Dahil dito ay magkakawatak-watak ang PNP at AFP. Magkakaroon na naman ng kudeta at maaaring magtagumpay dahil kasama na ang mga kapulisan sa aaklas.

7. Kung sa gitnang Mindanao ay mabubuhay na naman ang nakalimutan na sanang hidwaan sa pagitan ng mga Kristiyano at Muslim, magkakaroon ang mga apektadong lugar ng mga teritoryo ng MILF, BIFF at MNLF. Makikisakay na rin sa kaguluhan ang Abu Sayyaf. Gagawing sentro ng mga terorista na gumagalaw sa Asya ang Mindanao. Dahil dito, mabubuhay na naman ang mga grupong Kristiyano na lumalaban sa adhikaing isinusulong ng Bangsamoro.

8. Kung titindi ang naghalu-halo nang kaguluhan ay lalong mamamayagpag ang pagnegosyo ng bawal na gamot sa Pilipinas, lalo na at napatunayan ang kaluwagan ng mga batas at patakaran laban dito, kaya kahit sa loob ng mga kulungan nakakapagpatuloy sa pagnegosyo ang mga nakakulong nang mga drug dealers. Mamamayagpag din ang extortion ng maliliit na grupo na ang iba ay na-train na sa paggawa ng bomba, pero ang pinakamalaking extortion group ay Abu Sayyaf pa rin. Mindanao ang gagawing balwarte ng mga terorista na kikilos sa buong Asya!

Sa alin man sa mga nabanggit na senaryo, malinaw na ang talo ay mga Pilipino sa kabuuhan, Muslim man o Kristiyano, lalo na at nakasentro ang mga kaguluhan sa pagmintina ng kabuuhan pa rin ng Pilipinas kahit na may Bangsamoro na. Kawawa sina Fatima at Maria…sina Abdullah at Juan dahil sa kasakiman ng iilan!

Dahil sa mga kaguluhang nangyayari at mga agam-agam na hindi nagpapatulog ng mahimbing sa mga Pilipino…sino ang may sala, o sinu-sino sila? Ang sagot diyan ay ang palasak sa Ingles na: your guess is as good as mine!

Ang sinasabing massacre sa Mamasapano, Maguindanao noong January 25, Linggo, kung saan ay nasawi ang 44 na pulis at nasugatan ang iba pa, ay palatandaan na hindi magkakaroon ng katahimikan sa Mindanao kahit pa mayroon nang peace agreement. Ang sinasabi ng mga taga-gobyerno at MILF na misencounter daw ay hindi kapani-paniwala dahil inabot ang palitan ng putok ng mahigit sampung oras. Sa paliwanag ng mga eksperto, kung misencounter, dapat sandali lang ang nangyaring palitan ng putok dahil aatras ang isa sa mga grupo kung nakilala nito ang mga kabarilan na hindi naman pala kaaway. Ang nangyari, kahit nakabulagta na ang mga pulis ay pinagbabaril pa ng MILF at pinagnakawan pa!

Ang pakay ng mga pulis ay nasa loob ng teritoryo ng MILF, at ito ay terorista. Hindi puwedeng hindi ito alam ng MILF. Sana, kung gusto ng MILF ay kapayapaan, noon pa lang, sila na mismo ang gumawa ng paraan upang ito ay mahuli at isinurender sa pamahalaan, kahit pa nasa pangangalaga siya ng breakaway group na BIFF. At ang isa pang malaking tanong ay kung bakit hinahayaan ng MILF na manatili ang BIFF sa kanilang teritoryo gayong alam nitong tinutugis ito ng hukbong sandatahan ng Pilipinas dahil ang turing nga ay terorista.

Hangga’t hindi napaplantsa ang mga gusot ng pinag-uusapang Bangsamoro Basic Law, hindi ito dapat lagdaan. Kung sakaling ipilit ang lagdaan kahit hilaw, hindi rin ito maipapatupad agad dahil siguradong may maghahain ng TRO muna na susundan naman ng kaso dahil sa mga sasabihing butas ng mga probisyon. Kung makalusot man, maipatupad at pupunduhan ng malaki, ang mga kritiko nito na hindi nabiyayaan, kahit mga kasama pa ng MILF ay siguradong parang buwitre na aaligid upang makatiyempo ng mapupuna na gagamiting dahilan sa paghihiwalay sa nasabing grupo. Breakaway group na naman na magiging problema ng mga taga-Mindanao!

Ang paghiwalay ng BIFF mula sa MILF ay tanda na hindi malakas at epektibo ang kasalukuyang pamunuan ng huling nabanggit na grupo, kaya asahan, na kung sakaling makalusot at matuloy ang peace agreement, ay may iba pang grupong titiwalag at hahasik ng perhuwisyo. Ilan pa kayang breakaway groups ang mabubuo?

Ang nakakabahala ay kung sakaling mayroon na ngang Bangsamoro sa Mindanao, pero may mga breakaway at terrorist groups na hindi kayang masawata ng MILF, siguradong dito magtatago ang mga terorista na maghahasik ng perhuwisyo sa ibang panig ng bansa. Maaaring Bangsamoro na ang gagamiting sentro sa paggawa ng mga bomba na gagamitin sa terroristic activities sa bansa. Sa simpleng salita, gagawing “hideout” ng mga terorista ang Bangsamoro kung saan sila ay untouchable. Ang pagtago ng matagal ng isang foreign terrorist sa balwarte ng MILF ay isang malaking pruweba na maaaring mangyari itong agam-agam. Kaya ano pang kapayapaan ang maaasahan ng mga taga-Mindanao?

Walang aasahang pagsuplong sa mga nakatagong terorista. At the rate the pockets of unrest are scarring the face of the earth, horrendous sentiments have practically overcame the peoples of different nations. The overzealous races even think of the events as premonitions of the Biblical Armageddon.

The African continent has long been rocked with unrests, and so are parts of Europe. The Asian regions are not free from bickering among neighboring countries over disputed parcels of maritime territories, and even the country of Uncle Sam, long known as the cradle of democracy is not without its share of bombings.

European countries have come together to meld themselves into the European Union (EU). In Asia, there is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) over which hovers “big brother”, China. In the Middle East, there is the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). Left out are the weak black African nations, the Judaic country of Israel, and Japan that still manifest unwavering faith in the United Nations.

With the emergence of China as an economic giant, and which wisely makes use of such reputation to its advantage, the US and other traditionally strong nations, wisely maintain their safe perch on the fence, as they gawk at events around them. The US lives up to its reputation as champion of democracy by meddling in the affairs of the exploited countries, and in so doing, drags along willing allies. China, on the other hand, stealthily and discreetly impresses its mark of economic hold throughout the world which is dangerously polarized between the haves and the haves not, while concentrating its focus in Asia – an open land of opportunities where labor can be had for a pittance, where natural resources are ready for the taking, and worse, where lives wallow in poverty.

It will not be long, for the earth to be finally sliced like a cake into portions that represent blocks of the African countries, Islamic countries, European countries, north and south American countries, mainland Asian countries, and Southeast Asian countries….with the weak coming under control of the strong. If Israel fails to choose which group to join, it may again suffer the wrath that caused the dispersal and persecution of its people, although, the US has proved to be a dependable protector, but for how long?

The world is undergoing a cleansing. Aside from the man-made calamities – wars that systematically wipe out helpless populations, it is also periodically ravaged by natural catastrophes such as, typhoons, floods, earthquakes, and plagues. Lethal bombs that can zero-in to their targets, thousands of miles away can be launched by countries that are driven by maniacal desire to rule the world. Technology has made another world war that may ensue, sophisticated, sweeping and short-lived, as warring countries can pelt each other with remote-controlled bombs that can practically wipe out cities in minutes.

It seems, the world is taking a course fated with man’s self-destruction elicited by his greed.

Heeding the Call for Peace in Mindanao

March 27, 2014 shall find its space in the annals of the Philippine history as the most significant day that serves as a landmark for the concerted effort in finally planting the seed of peace in identified areas of Mindanao, populated by Muslims, Christians and indigenous tribes. Misunderstanding, that some blame to religion and later, politics, hindered all efforts to establish a lasting homogenous atmosphere in the central, western and southern areas of the biggest island of the country. Decades have been spent by past presidents to ponder on how peace among the diversified people could be achieved, to no avail. Even the attempt of a powerful Middle East country to mediate which resulted to the establishment of the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), proved futile. It took a firm resolved from President Noynoy Aquino to finally complete the pages of mutually beneficial provisions that heeded the incessant call for peace and finally put an end to the senseless struggle among Filipinos with diverse faith and culture.

 

For so many years, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters were lost in pockets of “war”. Villages were abandoned, school buildings were razed to the ground, children were deprived of their basic needs for normal mental and physical development, rice fields were untended and left to the mercy of the cogon grass and talahib (sturdy tropical grass that grow to as tall as seven feet). Affected Filipinos who survived the senseless killings, be they Muslims, Christians or members of indigenous tribes could just cry as they recall the tragedies that befell them.

 

I was a witness to this. The unrest was the reason why I got hired to work in the Department of Social Welfare that opened an office in our town to serve the evacuees who came in hordes. We would visit evacuation centers in neighboring towns filled with families uprooted from their villages, forced to abandon ripening grains of rice ready for the harvest. We encountered maimed villagers being brought to the hospitals. Practically children stopped going to school as the buildings were used as evacuation centers. In some villages, during “encounters”, we witnessed how Muslims would run in one direction and the Christians in another direction, although, they had been living together for years as neighbors. Those are pathetic scenes that still linger in my mind.

 

This time around, the survivors have the right to be heard and be given a chance for a peaceful co-existence in Mindanao. I just pray, that those who have selfish motive in the process for peace shall think twice before doing their act …again.
