Total Cleansing of the Philippines may be Impossible, but Something is being Done by Duterte

By Apolinario Villalobos

Unlike the past administrations, something is being done by the Duterte’s own today as regards the problem on drugs and criminality. It is an accepted fact that had the past administrations after Marcos did their job in at least curbing the proliferation of the drug menace in the country, it could have not gone to the seemingly uncontrollable extent at the time of the Duterte administration. Pro-life advocates say that since the death penalty had no effect on criminals anyway, it is good that it has been scrapped. They forgot that when Marcos had a big time Chinese drug lord shot at Luneta, there was an exodus of other drug lords out of the country and the spread of illegal drug somehow decreased, as even the use of marijuana to which the drug users resorted was minimized.

Duterte himself, insisted that the reason why some observers say that the death penalty has no effect on criminals is because, the laws were not strictly implemented. Although there were apprehensions before, convictions were very insignificant in number due to corrupt judges or the so-called “rogues in robe”, even the police rank has been tainted with involvement in view of the so-called “recycled drugs” that find their way to the streets. Some high-ranking government officials were not spared with the uncovering of the systematic “narco-political” scheme in which “narco-money” is raised to finance the campaign of many politicians who as expected get elected. Even some of those in the military are involved according to the list revealed by Duterte. As it is a public knowledge that as soon as apprehensions were blotted down, but with suspects bailed out by their financiers who will be hanged or convicted to die if there are no convicts?

The stumbling blocks in the effort of cleansing are the so-called, religious and human rights advocates who by their acts, show that those they protect are the criminals instead of the victims. Their banner is emblazoned with “unjust extrajudicial killings” with their fingers pinpointing at the police and the new president. Not a single banner carries even a lightly-written “save the victims of illegal drugs”. Their acts show hypocrisy to the highest level!

Total cleansing of the country from illegal drugs could mean a lot for the Filipinos who are surprised by the number of those affected, as practically, greed has bred corruption in all levels and sectors of the society. Again, the problem here, are the stumbling blocks.

By the way, in building highways, boulders and rocks that block the way are bulldozed, otherwise, the highways will never be leveled and paved with either concrete or asphalt.

  1. Duterte knows he has created a shit storm by a mess that is escalating the country more into backwardness. Everyone knows that his foolish strategy as a hardliner to control the drug menace is wrong. You need to cut out the supply to stop the spread of drugs. Once supply is diminished, the price shoots so high that users will have no other resort but to quit, which further cripples the remaining supply. Instead what has he done? In order to kill 5% of suppliers, he’s killed 95% of the users. Cutting down demand will further reduce the price of drugs and thus encourage more users to get hooked! That’s why every advanced country having a drug menace use strategy, custom control, drug lab “search & destroy” missions, police patrolling, disabling internal corruption, legislation etc etc., POLICIES….not ruthless jungle warfare and mayhem like what Duterte does. What did Columbia and the USA do when it saw the increase in Narco traffic? They went after and killed Pablo Escobar, not randomly start killing the Columbian or American people. UAE, Saudi, Malaysia, Singapore have the death sentence if caught selling narcotics but has Duterte announced the same? No! But, in all his limited wisdom, he decides on performing grid wise house shakedowns!

Then why persist instead trying to correct? Spend this time and effort in opening more rehabs and counseling centers? Invest in technology to nab the criminals and drug producers? What he’s doing is just making the shit hit the fan and nothing else, creating pandemonium, chaos and confusion. Far larger and advanced countries haven’t cracked down so viciously as him because they know no substantial solution will be achieved that way and the vice will just continue to rear its head up until one day you can fight no more.

Can anyone name one other reform Duterte has globally announced in international media to make the Philippines better, whether it is economic reforms, military spending, education, healthcare, manufacturing, GDP growth, taxation, imports/exports, infrastructure development, aviation, monetary policy, fiscal budgets, investment, tourism etc.?…

How are you going to combat China if it attacks? Is the Philippines ready to take on China in a full bloodied war? Has it improved their defense systems?

No, instead Duterte prefers to crack silly jokes, entertain his audience with obscene remarks and lash out against public figures ( the Pope, Ban ki Moon, Obama, rape jokes). These are people who have achieved laurels in the arena of human development, Duterte hasn’t done shit except bring sorrow and grief to the people.

  3. there are so many blunders in the effort of Duterte…corrupt government officials are among them….when drug lords are apprehended they go scot free regardless of what amount a bail is slapped on the offender…another are the so-called human rights groups…all they do is criticize, but they have not suggested anything….Operation Tokhang is about the chance given to the drug addicts and pushers to surrender, but they chose to go back to their old ways after signing waivers….the drug lords are inside the Bilibid which is the latest subject of investigation now…. the “cleansing” cannot be done overnight…he should be given the chance….if the Filipinos are able to manifest “patience” during the past administrations which have not done anything, why can’t similar patience be given to Duterte? ALSO, THERE IS NO DEATH SENTENCE IN THE PHILIPPINES WHICH DUTERTE IS TRYING TO REVIVE….MOST OF ALL, THE BUDGET HE INHERITED FROM THE PAST ADMINISTRATION DOES NOT PROVIDE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF REHAB CENTERS…THE PROBLEMS THAT HE INHERITED FROM THE PAST ADMINISTRATIONS HAVE GREATLY PILED UP THAT HE WOULD SOMETIMES ADMIT HIS HELPLESSNESS…HE IS JUST A HUMAN BEING WITH LIMITATIONS AFTER ALL!
