Trust, Confidence and Betrayal

Trust, Confidence and Betrayal

By Apolinario Villalobos

More often than not, it is not easy to just trust anybody… anybody for that matter. Without trust, there is no confidence.  Even within the family, members sometimes hold back information and feelings from each other. It comes to a point, that even the mother sometimes misunderstands her children because they do not confide some of their feelings, especially, problems with her. More so with most parents, as husbands and wives, they cannot help themselves from not divulging everything about themselves. Some couples are fortunate that despite this predicament, they still persist in maintaining their relationship for the sake of the children.

Betrayal results when despite the effort of a person to trust somebody, behind his back, the confidante does otherwise, especially, due to selfish motives. A trusting wife for instance is betrayed by her philandering husband; a trusting husband is betrayed when the wife dates her college boyfriend; a sister who sneaks out of the house to date a suitor may be betrayed by a brother to their parents, just because she failed to give him the promised money in exchange for a cover up. The greatest betrayal was done by Judas when he turned over Jesus to his enemies in exchange for a few pieces of silver. The betrayal was done despite the trust given him by Jesus as one of his apostles.

Practically, no country is free from the hideous betrayal of their leaders after they were elected to their posts by the citizenry.  Somehow, in time, due to selfish motives, the trust and confidence given by voters to their officials crumble. These selfish motives are spelled by corruption which has become a common mark of the various governments, today.  No government in the world could attest that it is free of this evil stain.

Among friends, to prevent betrayal to ensue, insignificant differences are endured which is a commendable act, although, the level of their trust and confidence to each other has been affected. But not everybody can be persevering enough, especially, if pride comes in the way. We have to be honest about that.

Mankind will never be free from this quandary. There will always be a reason for not trusting and commit betrayal. Even among countries that have forged treaties of mutual protection, there will always be a hidden agenda of selfishness. Not even the United Nations will ever be an organization of countries that trust each other, as signs evidently show how underdog countries are left by their big brother allies at the mercy of clandestine exploiting ones…not even the different religions with their respective hierarchy within which, a scramble for supremacy regularly puts them in embarrassing headlines.

Heaven was not spared from this.  All we have to do is check the bible for the story about “fallen angels”…
